History of St. John's Church, Mullabrack

st_johns_mullabrack_church.jpgThere has been a Christian Church on the rath or ringed at Mullabrack or 'hill of speckled summit' for over 1000 years.

The first Church, a small wooden structure, was founded by the Culdee Monks of Armagh, probably in the 9th century and since then at least five different Church buildings have occupied this ancient site.

The present Church is very much the product of extensive 19th century restoration and rebuilding, which altered a simple cruciform 17th century structure dramatically, by the addition of a tower (1814), two side aisles and the enlargement of what up until then, had been a small gallery for musicians (1830).
