Birth: December 16,1819

Death: February 10, 1860

 

Born in the village of Hamiltonsbawn, George Lambert was serving as a sergeant-major with the 84th (York & Lancaster) Regiment, when he was awarded the Victoria Cross, for his heroic deeds in the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

He showed great courage and his citation stated "For Distinguished Bravery whilst serving, the three battles - Havelock's Column at Oonao (29th July 1857), Bithoor (16th August 1857, when the rebels where driven from a strong position using bayonets), and at the Assault and capture of Lucknow (25th September 1857).

He was later promoted to lieutenant and served as adjutant of the regiment.

He passed away at Hillesborough Barracks, Sheffield, England, and his remains are en-turned at Wardsend Cemetary, Sheffield.

 His medals can be viewed at the York & Lancaster Regiment Museum in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England.

 A commemorative monument can be viewed at St John's Church of Ireland, Mullabrack.
